How to Strengthen Your Child's Immune System Energetically

A visitor asked recently how to strengthen a child's immune system through energy.

I can relate to that question. When my daughter was 8, she went through a period of having one serious illness after another. She missed weeks of school.

My husband and I were of course distraught. Her medical doctor just shrugged when we asked what might be causing this apparent immune system melt-down, and what we might do about it.

We ended up taking her to the wonderful Seattle (Washington, U.S.) homeopathic doctor (and naturopath), Richard Mann. Dr. Mann prescribed a constitutional remedy for her, and she improved greatly. She's 16 now, and has never had another bout with pneumonia or other serious illness since.

Homeopathy is a vibrational (energetic) medicine, and I highly recommend it to strengthen a child's immune system.

Of course, I also did energy work for her (at that point in my life, Reiki).

Energy healing is a wonderful, loving, relaxing way to strengthen your child's immune system. The most important thing is to "listen the energy," but in general I'd recommend grounding, and smoothing and balancing of the field, along with balancing the first, second, and fourth chakras in particular. For more detailed information <a href="http://www.the-energy-healing-site.com/natural-home-remedies.html"target="_blank">go to this page on my website about energetically working with injury and illness. Donna Eden's book "Energy Medicine" is also full of suggestions.

If the child is old enough, teach her or him some basic energetic techniques such as grounding, centering, self-calming, surrounding her/himself with light, and strengthening the boundaries of his/her field. Teach your child how to play with and control the boundaries of his/her field, drawing it in closer when necessary for self-protection and to concentrate strength.

Id also recommend what I might call "practical energetics." Knowing how much the mind and emotions influence the immune system, look at what's going on emotionally in your child's life. Look deep. For example, school--even when the school is "good" and the teacher is nice--is not a benign place for every child.

Get your child out in the natural world a lot. This is one of the best things you can do. Hike, go to the forest, the lake, the river, the beach, even just the park. Activity and fresh air work on both a physical and an energetic level to strengthen the immune system.

Allow your child to have plentiful contact with animals. Domestic animals tend to be wonderful healers, helping to buffer, absorb, and balance energies.

Teach your child--or have someone else, such as a counselor--teach her, how to be respectfully assertive. This helps your child develop energetic as well as psychological boundaries.

Stress inhibits immune system function, so teaching your child relaxation techniques and providing a calm home atmosphere are other ways to enhance their immune function on both physical and energetic levels. <a href="http://www.the-energy-healing-site.com/relaxation-techniques.html"target="_blank">You can learn some good relaxation techniques here.

I wish every parent and every child radiant health and a loving relationship.

Upcoming movie "The Difference." Is it a Scam?

The short answer is "perhaps." Could be the producer's intentions are entirely good.

But it seems that if you're being asked to "participate," as many alternative health care providers are, what they are looking for is investors. At least that's what an early almost-adopter is saying.

The people making the movie have been contacting people (I received both an email and a phone call)in alternative health fields and asking them to "get involved" in what they claim will be a historic, ground-breaking, evolutionary movie that's kinda sorta like "The Secret."

In neither the email nor the phone message I received was it clear how they wanted me to "be involved." But the messages were intriguing, and of course, complimentary, designed to make me feel kind of special.

I got the email first and it sounded fishy to me, especially since I couldn't find any more specific information on the web, so I deleted the message.

Then I got a voicemail message. I wondered where on earth they got my home phone, since it's my business phone that I put on my websites. Felt kind of intrusive and creepy.

So I searched the web again for information, came up with the same vague claptrap--until I found a 2/17/10 blog entry by a woman from San Diego who had received the same invitation and actually attended an event to learn more about "getting involved" with "The Difference."

In short, what she found was that it was a pitch for investors. They were asking for money. And apparently they don't even have a concept for the movie, let alone a movie.

Here's the address of her blog post:
http://www.planetwendi.com/2010/02/the-movie-the-difference

It may not be a scam to take advantage of a demographic group that's generally generous and trusting. But even at it's best, if what Wendi from San Diego says is true, it doesn't sound to me like a very promising business proposition.

My goal in posting this is to help get some more information out about this movie, so that people can make a more informed decision about whether or not they want to "participate."

I wish the highest and best good for everyone involved.

Music for Clearing Your Energy Field

A visitor to the site recently asked about music for clearing the energy field. What a great question!

Music is so powerful, and can be a great way to clear your field.

Personally, I usually go for calm, relaxing music to clear my field. Artists who always do the trick for me are Carlos Nakai, Nawang Khechog, and Krishna Das. Certain classical music is good too--I find Mozart works well. I also like nature sounds incorporated into music. A lot of the music that Jeffrey Thompson produces through the Relaxation Company using alpha brain waves is also very clearing (and relaxing). Flutes, too, seem to work well for clearing and smoothing my energy.

I use all of these artists (and others) in my healing practice as well.

But sometimes vigorous, percussive music is fabulous for "clearing the cobwebs"! It just depends.

I think that any music that is created with a good intention and that holds a high vibration can be effective--and what works for one person might not work for another. I think that everyone is going to develop their own favorites. Fortunately there's so much out there to choose from.

If you have some favorite music for clearing your field, feel free to write me using the "Contact Me" form on my website (bottom of the nav bar). I'll publish people's favorites at some point.

Choosing a Good Healer/Energy Healer Ethics

I was recently asked how to tell a good healer from a bad healer.

Interesting question!

First, let me say that the effects of a healing might be subtle, and might not be felt for days or even weeks after the healing. They might occur, and you don't notice them because they don't come in the form you expect. You might even feel worse for a while after a healing. (This is called a healing crisis--it should be brief.)

There are many ways that a healing might seem to have no effect, or even a negative effect. So you might think that even a very good, effective healer is a "bad healer."

I think a more important way to evaluate a healer is by their ethics. Among other things, an ethical healer should:

Practice informed consent (i.e. communicate with you about what they're going to do and get your OK to do it)

Keep your sessions confidential

Not attempt to diagnose medical or psychological conditions (unless they are also a medical or psychotherapy professional)

Urge you to seek and follow conventional medical or mental health advice whenever you have a medical or mental health issue

Not interfere with medical or mental health treatment

Not pressure you to make subsequent appointments

Not initiate or allow any sexual or romantic contact or relations (or violate any other boundaries that make you feel uncomfortable)

Answer your questions clearly (although I have to admit that some things about energy healing are hard for me to explain easily, partly because we just don't have the vocabulary to talk about them yet)

Not make grandiose claims, and especially not make promises to heal you of life-threatening illnesses or conditions.

Another way I would evaluate a healer is by talking to her or his former clients. Did the clients feel they were treated ethically? Did they notice any impact or change?

I'd also want to talk to the healer at least by phone, and ask them a number of questions.

You can find those questions, and more information about choosing a healer, at Choosing a Healer.

I wish you radiant good health and wonderful people in your life to support you in maintaining it!

Energy Fields and Pain

Happy New Year to everyone!

A recent visitor to The Energy Healing Site was inquiring about feeling physical pain in the energy field.

It's been my experience that pain can usually if not always be felt in the field. When I'm working with someone who's in pain, I feel it as a disturbance in the field near--though not always directly over--the site of their physical pain.

Occasionally when I'm doing energy work near the site of a client's physical pain, I experience it as pain in my own hand . However, this pain doesn't hurt the same way "my own" pain does. It's as if I am experiencing pain without the dimension of suffering. (For me, that's always a lesson in how much additional suffering we cause ourselves with our fear and other emotions that we attach to pain.)

Energy healing can often diminish pain. This is especially true for cases where the pain is largely caused by thoughts and emotions.

In my own experience, energy healing also often reduces or removes pain with obvious physical causes such as injuries or surgery. When pain has an actual physical cause, I'm not sure if the pain itself is actually "removed," or if my client's emotional reaction to it (fear, anger, resistance, etc.) is removed. Whatever the reason, I've seen clients who were practically writhing in pain just hop up and go about their business after an energy healing.

My hope (and goal for creating this site) is that eventually someone in every family will know how to do basic energy work--the same way the adults in a family know how to clean and dress a scraped knee or tend a child's cold. Energy healing is so valuable, so loving--and it never does any harm.

Wishing you a radiant and joyful 2010.

What Is the "Subtle Body?"

Recently someone wanted to know what the subtle body is.

Except in Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda, to my knowledge there aren't any strict agreements on terms for the non-physical aspects of a person, such as the term "subtle body."

But in general, I think when people talk about the subtle body, they mean the non-material aspects of a person--everything that is not his or her physical body.

In other words, I think that it's commonly used as a collective term that includes all the other aspects of the human energy system--emotional body, mental body, chakras, meridians, etc.

Of course different schools of energy healing may have more precise definitions than this.

But most commonly, I think that it's used as a general, collective term for the parts of us that are real, but can't be seen or felt in the normal way--hence the term "subtle."

Best Essential Oils for Relaxation

Several visitors to the site recently have inquired about the best essential oil for relaxation.

That's easy! It's lavender, hands-down. Not only is it great for relaxation, it's also inexpensive, widely available, safe to use, and rarely allergenic.

Oh, yeah, and it smells good!

Should You Use Heat or Cold for a Headache?

A question that keeps coming up on The Energy Healing Site is whether heat or cold is better for a headache. While this is not strictly "energy healing," I thought I'd address it in the hopes of helping people manage headaches.

I used to get headaches frequently (don't much anymore!) so I've looked into lots of headache remedies. I also learned quite a bit about headache remedies in massage school.

Headaches are very individual, and what works for one person may or may not work for another. Nevertheless, here are my thoughts on whether to use heat or cold for headache relief:

The two most common types of headache are tension and migraine.

Tension headaches are often caused (or exacerbated) by tight muscles in the back of the neck, right at the top, near where the neck and head join. Gentle heat applied to the upper neck can help relieve tension headaches. (Massaging here is also very good.)

Migraine headaches are more complicated, and more idiosyncratic. But in general, the most likely thing to help is to apply gentle cold to the head (e.g. a cool cloth on the forehead), and warmth to the hands and feet. This is because dilated blood vessels in the brain are thought to be a contributing factor in migraine.

When trying new remedies for migraine, go gentle and conservative, because migraine often makes people hypersensitive to sensory input. And we do not want to make a migraine worse!

I thought the Wikipedia article on migraine was good.

And of course, see my pages on using energy healing to help with headaches.

It goes without saying that you should see your doctor ASAP if you are having an unusual headache, especially one that is extremely painful, extremely sudden, or involves mental confusion, difficulty walking or speaking, loss of vision, or a high fever.

Here's to your health!

The Powerful Medicine of Small Acts of Kindness

Today in Tacoma the weather is cold and gray. As I prepare a heated neck wrap for a client, I am reminded of a similar day, over thirty years ago. I was 22, in my room in a bland bed and breakfast in a mid-sized English town, near the end of a four-month trip through Europe. A chill had crept into me, both from the weather, and from loneliness. As I prepared for bed, a knock came at my door -- the little daughter of the proprietors. She smiled shyly and handed me a hot water bottle wrapped in a cloth. I thanked her, and went to bed warmed.

What is most interesting to me is that I have never forgotten that very small gesture of kindness.

It reminds me that I don't necessarily need to accomplish any grand achievements for my life to be significant. We can have such an impact on others -- we can truly make the world a better place -- through a life-time of seemingly trivial acts of human warmth and compassion.

We can never know when a small, nearly anonymous kindness will be remembered for a lifetime. We can never know when an off-hand word of encouragement will be a powerful medicine for someone.

But I think we can assume that each word or action from the warmth of our hearts raises the vibration of the planet, weaving a web of goodness that lifts each of us higher and higher.

Symptoms of Pneumonia

To round out my previous post on pneumonia, here's information on signs and symptoms, and when to seek medical care.

Symptoms of Pneumonia
This information is taken directly from www.webmd.com:

Symptoms of pneumonia caused by bacteria in otherwise healthy people younger than 65 usually come on suddenly. They often start during or after an upper respiratory infection, such as influenza or a cold, and may include:

Cough, often producing mucus (sputum) from the lungs. Mucus may be rusty or green or tinged with blood.

Fever, which may be less common in older adults.

Shaking, "teeth-chattering" chills (one time only or many times).

Fast, often shallow, breathing and the feeling of being short of breath.

Chest wall pain that is often made worse by coughing or breathing in.

Fast heartbeat.

Feeling very tired (fatigue) or feeling very weak (malaise).

Nausea and vomiting.

Diarrhea.

Symptoms of pneumonia not caused by bacteria (nonbacterial) include fever, cough, shortness of breath, and little mucus when you cough. They may come on gradually and are often less obvious and less severe than those of bacterial pneumonia. Many people don't know that they have nonbacterial pneumonia because they do not feel sick.

When symptoms are mild, your doctor may call your condition "walking pneumonia."

Older adults and children
Older adults may have different, fewer, or milder symptoms, such as no fever or a cough with no mucus (a dry or nonproductive cough). The major sign of pneumonia in older adults may be when there is a change in how clearly they think (confusion or delirium) or when a lung disease they already have gets worse.

In children, symptoms may depend on age:

In infants younger than 1 month of age, symptoms may include having little or no energy (lethargy), feeding poorly, grunting, or having a fever.

In children, symptoms of pneumonia are often the same as in adults. Your doctor will look for signs such as cough and a breathing rate over 60 breaths per minute.

When to See the Doctor
And here's an explanation of when to see the doctor, taken directly from the Mayo Clinic website:

Because pneumonia can be life-threatening, see your doctor as soon as possible if you have a persistent cough, shortness of breath, chest pain, unexplained fever especially a lasting fever of 102 F (38.9 C) or higher with chills and sweating or if you suddenly feel worse after a cold or the flu.

Be especially prompt about seeking medical care if you're an older adult or you smoke, drink excessively, have an injury, are undergoing chemotherapy or take medication such as prednisone that suppresses your immune system. For some older adults and people with heart failure or lung ailments, pneumonia can quickly become a life-threatening condition.

Take good care of yourself and stay well this fall and winter!

Home Remedy for Pneumonia??? Get Yourself to a Doctor!

Recently someone visiting The Energy Healing Site asked about home remedies or energy healing for pneumonia.

As someone who used to be prone to pneumonia, I have two words in response: "No" and "don't!"

Pneumonia is serious. It can be life-threatening. If you feel you may have pneumonia, get yourself immediately to a doctor. If you do have pneumonia, you will most likely receive a prescription for antibiotics, which you should take as directed. (Don't stop taking them early just because you feel better: finish the prescription.)

I know these are financial hard times for many people. Here in the U.S. many of us do not have health insurance, and it's tempting to try to treat everything at home. But pneumonia isn't something you can do that with. If you suspect pneumonia, you must find a way to get medical care.

After you have seen a doctor, in addition to following the doctor's directions, you should make sure to take super-good care of yourself: get plenty of rest, eat well, reduce stress--you know what you should do!

At that point--after you have seen the doctor--energy healing can be useful. Personally, energy healing has helped me recover relatively quickly from pneumonia, instead of having that feeling of exhaustion drag on for weeks and even months.

And of course, energy healing can be good preventive care, along with other practical self-care measures like good sleep, good food, good mental attitude, nutritional supplements, etc.

See my next post for symptoms of pneumonia, and when to seek a doctor's care.

Take good care of yourself and stay well this fall and winter!

Is There A "Best" Type of Energy Healing

Lately a couple of people have asked what the "best" type of energy healing is.

That's a very good question!

However, I don't think that there is a best type.

When I'm selecting a healer, I choose the <under>healer</under>, not the method. I've experienced gifted healers who work in many different modalities, including Restorative Touch&#153, Reiki, Healing Touch, shamanic healing, acupuncture, traditional medicine, and veterinary medicine (OK, that's for my dog, but she always makes me feel a lot better, too--thanks, Dr. Dorothy!)....I could go on but you get my point.

My advice would be for people to choose a healer who comes well recommended, whom they feel comfortable with, who operates with informed consent, who doesn't try to convince them to book a whole string of appointments at once, who feels caring and compassionate, whom they can communicate with, who makes them feel more whole, hopeful, and vibrant on at least one level of being -- and not to worry about the exact method of how the healer delivers the healing energy.

But that's just my opinion!

The Celtic Weave

Since some readers have expressed an interest in the Celtic Weave, I thought I'd expand on that.

The Celtic Weave is a wonderful energy healing concept taught by Donna Eden. I'll just summarize it here, and point you to her book Energy Medicine, or her website, www.innersource.net, if you are interested in more details.

As she sees, it, the body's energies spiral and criss-cross, or weave themselves into a pattern she calls the "Celtic Weave." She notes that other traditions have called it other things, including the "Tibetan Energy ring," and the caduceus--those intertwined serpents on a rod that is often used as a symbol for western medicine. She describes it thus:

"Like invisible threads that keep all the energy systems functioning as a single unit, the Celtic Weave networks throughout and around the body in spiraling figure-eight patterns. It is a living system, continually weaving new cross-overs, ever expanding and contracting."

Eden describes the Celtic weave as going down to the tiniest cellular level, as well as out beyond the aura.
Like other parts of the energy anatomy, you can work with the Celtic Weave to support and restore health. Eden (in a great online article at http://www.energymed.org/hbank/handouts/tibetan_energy_rings.htm) describes how to do this:

People can activate and strengthen their own Celtic Weave by tracing small and large figure eights all over their bodies and by moving their bodies in crossover patterns. Strengthening your own Celtic Weave helps hold the habit fields of healthy figure eight patterns. It is breathtaking to me to see how quickly the Celtic Weave responds and allows itself to be woven more tightly and appear fuller and more invigorated. . . . When activating the Celtic Weave, you follow your intuition in tracing all kinds of figure eights.

Personally, I often spontaneously find myself doing figure eights over a client's body. It always feels right--I don't think there's any way to go wrong with it!

More on the Hoku Point

The Energy Healing Site has been seeing a lot of interest in the Hoku Point, so I thought I'd write a little more about it. Because it's so useful, I think that it's one of those self-treatment techniques that everyone who is interested in natural healing should know.
The Hoku Point is a key acupuncture point in the hand. Located on the Large Intestine merdian (LI4), it is also called "Joining the Valley."
Hoku/LI4 is very accessible and amenable to self-treatment with acupressure. Acupressure (as you probably know, but just in case you don't!) is a needless derivative of acupuncture. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, illness and pain are seen as the result of interrupted flow of qi (energy). The aim of acupressure and acupuncture is to restore and balance the flow of qi through the body. Acupressure/acupuncture points are places where the flow of qi can be influenced to regulate body functions and relieve pain.

Location
The Hoku Point is easy to locate. Lightly press your thumb up against your index finger. In the webbing between thumb and index finger, near the bottom of the thumb, the flesh of your hand will mound up. The Hoku Point is on the top of the hand, at the apex of that mound.
You can find some very detailed images of its location here:
http://www.tcmadvisory.com/2007/8-12/200781210309.html
Uses
The Hoku Point is helpful with many health and wellness issues, including headaches, constipation, stress, arthritis, toothaches, any problem of the face, allergies, shoulder and arm pain, abdominal pain, amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, strengthening the immune system, shifting stagnation in the body, and general pain relief. It is particularly useful for relieving pain, anywhere in the body.
However, you should NOT use this point if you are pregnant. It may provoke uterine contractions and premature labor.
How-To
Put pressure on the Hoku Point by placing your thumb on the point, angling in a bit toward the bone, and your index finger opposite it, on the other side of the hand. Keep the holding hand relaxed. The point may be tender.
Hold the point for 15 seconds to one minute, then switch hands.
Of course, you should see your medical doctor if you have questions or concerns about your health, or if you have any signs of a serious health issue.
Certification Required for Energy Healing?

I have received several questions lately about whether a person needs certification in order to practice energy healing.

Laws in each state are different, but as far as I know, there is no official/legal certification required for a person to practice energy healing. (Although some forms of energy healing are protected by organizations and trademark/copyright laws, e.g. Healing Touch and Restorative Touch, and require certification from that organization for you to hold yourself out as a certified practitioner.)

However, if you are actually going to touch people's physical bodies, rather than just work in their energy field, you will probably need some kind of official license from a governmental unit of some kind (state, county, city--depends on where you live).

For example, in Washington state, where I live, if you want to do any professional hands-on work (i.e., if you are going to touch someone else's physical body), you need to be licensed with the state as a massage practitioner, nurse, physical therapist, or other health professional. Alternatively, being an ordained minister allows you to perform the style of energy work called "laying on of hands," in which you gently touch the physical body, Reiki-style.

Personally, I think that requiring a license or ordination for any professional hands-on work is a very good idea.

If you are going to do anything that can be construed as counseling, you will probably need some kind of official license as well.

But laws can vary widely from state to state and country to country, so if you are thinking of establishing an energy healing practice, you should definitely check the laws in your own state or country.

Certification requirements aside, I think that it's critical that energy healers hold to impeccable ethical standards.

Martin Rossman, M.D. on the Value of Symptoms

...The symptoms of illness often can be seen as signals for attention or ways of making us aware of needs that are not being met. Thus if we learn to pay attention to our body's signals or symptoms in a certain way, we can actually learn something from an illness that helps to bring us back into alignment with our potential for wellness. For we are always trying to maintain our alignment, balance, and growth in accordance with our purpose in life, whether we are fully conscious of that purpose or not. And there is a way of seeing and relating to symptoms that can actually help us to align the flow of energy in accordance with that purpose--a way that allows us to see illness as an opportunity. . .

Deepak Chopra Quote About the Nature of Reality

"A basic principle of Ayurveda is stated as: What you see you become. What you see is a selective act of attention and interpretation. Although you are inundated by billions of bits of sensory impulses every moment, you selectively filter out the vast majority, allowing only a very small fraction into your awareness. What you allow into your awareness is determined by your habitual patterns of seeing and interpreting the world. . . .

Reality is flexible and subject to revision. Reality is the result of perception, which is a selective act of attention and interpretation. . . .

Your habits of attention and interpretation create deeply ingrained beliefs, which are the interpretations you hold to be true. Beliefs create biology. . . ."

Body-Mind's Role in Spiritual Awakening

Jack Blackburn is a Seattle-based massage therapist, Certified Trager Practitioner, Reiki Master, spiritual counselor, and teacher. All of Jack's work is grounded in the notion of "presencing." He's in Japan this year, and publishing a series of thoughtful essays about the role of the body (or more precisely, the body-mind) in spiritual awakening, called "Resurrecting the Body." They are deep and thought-provoking essays--highly recommended.
Here's the link:

presencingsource.com/Newsletter.html

An excerpt from the first essay/"newsletter":

The Buddha found that there are three causes of suffering: avoidance, craving, and attachment. I believe that even more central to this understanding is our ongoing relationship with fear. Fear is the active agent in the creation of suffering.

And an excerpt from the second newsletter:

. . . .Our bodies are good and loyal servants who cater to our every need and are truthful, even when we dont want to listen. In our need to feel separate and superior, we cast aspersions on our bodies. Every major religion has condemned the body as sinful, deceptive, and deserving of punishment.

Perhaps we have been self-deceiving all along. . . .we have been looking in all the wrong places for ultimate truth. Perhaps the body-mind has been our guide to awakening all along. By presencing our bodies we may have been given the tool to grow our conscious awareness and investigate the mystery of Being. . .

I've taken a class from Jack, and he walks the talk. Again, the link to Jack's website:

Metaphors for the Body

Yesterday, as I was waiting for a client to come out of my treatment room, I was thinking about the metaphors we form in our mind for the body, and the impact those metaphors have on us--even though--perhaps especially because--they may be unconscious.

At this point in Western culture, the culturally/medically dominant metaphor for the body is a machine. Other culturally common metaphors are body as a prison; as a temple or vessel for the soul; as a dumb, brute beast; as a slave for the mind; as a tool for evil. The metaphor usually seems to involve a hierarchy, with the body below--far below--the mind.

I think that those kinds of metaphors or models for reality have a powerful impact on us--not just psychologically, but physically, too. I think we create our own reality--maybe even our own bodies. In essence, we are what we think we are.

So when I work with clients, I prefer to hold metaphors for the body such as:

* body as river of light

* body as embodied starlight

* body as fully conscious

* body as source of wisdom, as ally and protector

* body as information

* body as fluid, changeable, and conscious

* body as gateway to more subtle aspects of self (energy)

* body as mind or as subconscious mind

Underlying it all is my belief that the body is holy.

Here's an interesting article that discusses common Western metaphors for the body more fully--World of the Body: metaphor by Christina Jarvis
